A Wedding and Unrelated Trouble

Cali was a good time. The wedding was ... great, though not so story-filled. When all the bridesmaids are accounted for, it kinda kills that momentum. However, the groom's a fine addition to the fam, my cousin (the Bride) looked stunning and our other cousins are hilarious; we had a grand old time making fun of our parents being smashed, whether it was one aunt looking for a camera she was holding in her hand or my dad unequivocally proving to us he met a guy that played football with Apollo Creed in college.

Also, anytime a bag of frozen shrimp becomes a weekend-long running joke that brings people to tears more than once, you're probably enjoying yourself.

That said, I finished another poem over the weekend. Enjoy:

Trouble

Up against the wall
they kiss.

Clothes keeping them from contacting
these bricks blasted by the dirt of city civilization
familiar stones they might think not to touch
if they took time to think

But all of these are afterthoughts
because the conscious conceded to chemistry once
that kiss

became inevitable
became inviting
became the only focus of conversation to clear
spacing out every moment
so you see the play develop
before it ever unravels
and the only course of action is obvious.

Once you know that it's coming
you stop worrying about when
and start to squeeze tension from a stone
drop
by
drop
until she forces open the floodgates
with an impatient action that can't come back
and you'll always operate
knowing she made the move
made the effort
made herself care a little bit more than you'd like to

During the inevitable breakup
she will call you "callow"
and "elusive,"
citing that moment,
tears like paratroopers
poised to fall free and easy
following one another
down crevices cushioned by
pillows she doesn't sleep on
every night after you leave
because sleepovers might mean something
and for someone so fond
of knowing what's next
being aware of every outcome
means not trusting people to react rationally
because often they don't
and it's more fair for them
if it's not for fake
from the jump.

Everyone's more careful
when they know the pool is shallow
but it only takes six inches to drown
if you fall facedown
ass over teakettle
whistling Dixie because the situation
headed South for the summer
heating up so humid
the only real relief is artificial
and requires a little more investment
than you're willing to spend
even though it's probably worth it.

But you know your necessities
and sometimes
that sting keeps salient
the knowledge that there's something
better than this
and every empty attempt refuels the next one
until you've got enough gas
to go on without searching
inspecting the scenery
and stopping off where you want to
instead of relying
on fast-food options
that sate you
without ever settling your stomach.

Up against the wall
they kiss.

Until she pauses
pulls back so she can see his eyes
smiles
tells him he's trouble
and he doesn't
disagree.
